But no… Apparently the definition of patriotism over here is “I don’t care about other people, I only care about me, and also, kill brown people in other countries”

Improving your country IS serving it. Non Americans do it all the time, the act just isn’t associated with the word because the US has a media industry built to hijack the meaning of things. Don’t make me start talking all pro-social and hope pilled, I’m not that guy anymore.
I’m patriotic in the sense that I want what is best for my countrymen. I want that to be done in a manner where both me and my country are ethical and productive members of our global society.
This has nothing to do with blind, religious-like devotion.

That being said, a lot of “normies” use patriotism as a stand-in for a certain set of beliefs. I don’t love it but the “Shining City on the Hill” is better than the Third Reich.

Without knowing either of those people, they might be just as patriotic and it’s equally as bad.
