Using something like Winboat on top of a linux distro installation might be be the best option for you, since Winboat allows you to virtualize windows on a per-application basis.
(This is not Wine, it’s essentially a barebones VM, but I don’t think you need GPU acceleration for excel lol)

21·1 day agoHahaha. There’s no way to do so with data preservation. As is intentional by the team at Redmond…
If you’d like Win10 with actual security patches you can use the Enterprise IOT LTSC version, as Microsoft is contractually obligated to support it until 2032. There’s a website with a funny activation script and methods of acquiring a copy of the installation files if you are willing to do a little searching.
Of course, that’s just lesser poison. Your ideal solution is to remove dependence from Windows entirely, as it’s only going to get worse from here on out. But alas, if you must use Win10 for the time being, the method above is the best way to go about it with minimal garbage included in the install and update process.
Lay out your exit plan before 2032 hits though. The sooner, the better.

53·4 days agoI’m a bit confused why you’d like this idea though. This is essentially a built in TAS, so unless your desire to prevent challenge includes using the controls, I’m not sure how these experiences would count as genuine games.
That being said, I do appreciate accessibility and streamlined difficulties in games for those who desire them (even if I play games for the challenge).

193·4 days agoAs someone who does have a cognitive disability, there is a genuine difference between augmented input/level skip vs. what is effectively an integrated TAS.
Mario Kart 8 is a good example of accessibility that still empowers the player, as the player still needs to hold an input and retains control of the character - it’s just that massive errors that would result in loss (IE: falling off the track) are prevented by corrective steering taking control.
An automated TAS gives no empowerment to the player - it’s no different that running a lengthy macro script. If I wanted to watch the characters have an adventure without my ability to have influence in the journey, I’d just watch a movie instead.

1653·5 days agoWow that’s depressing. I guess the main solace is that if Sony patents this then we’re unlikely to see this practice on other systems.

If there’s any lesson we should have been taught by this timeline, it’s that even the moronic can spark large changes with enough spite.
(Although the more you learn, the less wasted spite you need XD)
