The shitty thing is it’s hard not to give the fuckers money.

Luxoticca owns most eyewear brands, optometrist offices, eyewear retailers, and even a ton of optical insurance providers. They control the frames, lenses, and more.

Oakley used to be independent, but they actually stopped lenscrafters from providing lenses for them and bullied their suppliers until Oakley’s stock dropped enough to buy them out. They’re the reason frames that should cost $15 cost $900.

They’re one of the clearest examples of a monopoly in the world, but we just fucking let it continue.

Of course - the $900 was in the original comment, I was answering to a child comment. $900 sounds more like a cost of contacting a Chinese factory and producing a small batch of your unique sunglasses based on 3d model you’ve sent to them:)

ok, so you buy those $50, $10, $5 ones, and the market will have to follow if there are no isiots paying more. It’s not electronics or machinery, it’s a piece of forged or extruded materials, and a couple of pieces of plastic or glass, the cost is not high (in case of prescription glasses and special coatings the price will raise, but it will mostly be labour price, it’s not something the manufacturer does

It’s harder for people who go to the optometrist and get their glasses.

The Luxoticca-owned insurance company makes them use the Luxoticca-owned optometrist that sells Luxoticca-owned frames with Luxoticca-owned lenses.

Moat people don’t even know you can ask the optometrist for your prescription so you can go buy frames and lenses from Zenni or Coastal.

Not sure where you’re located but I’m pretty sure providing the prescription automatically is standard almost everywhere after an eye exam.

I’ve worn glasses for decades and have gotten annual exams in all parts of the world. Always got a printout of my prescription and never had to ask.

I’m US American, and everyone I know including me has had to specifically ask for a copy of the prescription, and they usually try to leave information like the PD off. It’s scummy as fuck.

You have to specifically asknfor it in the US, and they act like it’s a crazy request. And they usually won’t give you your PD.
