From a practical standpoint, when combined with upgradable hardware, it means you can run the same machine for several years, saving money and reducing e-waste. I also believe that FOSS will always provide better long-term solutions than proprietary alternatives.

That’s true. A physical disc could also come with a requirement to contact a server in order to work and that server could be shutdown one day. I’m not saying physical media isn’t better. I strongly prefer it and hope that it sticks around. I just don’t think that’s the root of the issue.
I prefer physical media. My point is that getting Sony to keep it alive doesn’t fix the real issue.
Meh I love having a physical disc but digital-only is fine as long as DRM doesn’t prevent it from truly being yours and it doesn’t require an internet connection. Physical discs can be made to not work too.
I was going to say, an old 1L ThinkCentre Tiny, Optiplex Micro, or HP Mini would fit the bill nicely. I already have one set up for retro gaming. It would be nice to get it set up as kore of an overall media center, with a remote-friendly interface. I know I can do that with Libre elec and Kodi but I’m not a fan. KDE is my desktop of choice so I’d love to see what they come up with. Plasma Mobile is solid so I would imagine it could be similar.

Roku has been one of the worst from a privacy standpoint, alongside Amazon devices. Google isn’t much better but for privacy, there is no off the shelf option better than AppleTV. Heck, even the beloved Nvidia Shield gets poor marks for privacy.
The Linux ecosystem would whither and die without the likes of Red Hat.

I have it set up on my own home server. Before that, I had it set up on individual PCs. It’s super easy. I guess you mean public instances. I’ve never used one because it is so easy to set up for yourself.
Or maybe they want monthly/annual/whatever subscribers, not lifetime, and so they’re making the lifetime pass prohibitively expensive. I have a lifetime pass I purchased a few years ago but after running Jellyfin alongside Plex for a few months, I don’t think I could recommend Plex to anyone who simply wants to host their own media.

That sounds like every piece of tech in existence. Every laptop manufacturer does the same. The difference with Framework is that you can upgrade parts of your existing model with some of the new hardware if you want. You don’t have to have the latest and greatest but if you like a certain aspect of it, you can upgrade that.
