Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OSEnglish
39·1 day agowill be a modular and AI-focused OS
Take all the parts that used to be included and put them behind individual pay walls. I suggest Control Panel, powershell, network access, adding icons to start menu and task bar, using multiple monitors, the registry, right click menus. I’m sure even more could be added to this list with each starting at $5/mo, on top of the access fee and one drive expansions as access to your own hdd (other than the OS) is restricted behind a $20/mo sub.
Can I get my bonus now? - Microslop team
I can just drag windows out if full screen… windows I gotta double click then drag away.
Oh, oh. You can drag a window from a screen you can’t see to a screen you can. Doesn’t sound like a big deal til you are in bed and forgot to put a window on your big tv to pick your next item to watch
EDIT: what, did I miss on windows where you can select ‘move’ on the task manager and then move the window off a monitor you can’t see? lol
Funny, under win 10 I would wait weeks to do the updates, until I had no choice of reboot except update and reboot. At some point the machine would grind nearly to a halt with an update queued and soon as I did that update the machine would return to its regular speed.
How dare you be so succinct. Where is the flowery words that take space and say nothing?
Linux isn’t better than windows, it is a different ideology based on choice, it better meets our use and privacy goals. It is not loaded with “AI” yet, glaring at you Canonical, and for my needs it works with very minimal tinkering (add an app, change a setting)

Linux@lemmy.ml•On the unfortunate need for an "age verification" API for legal compliance reasons in some U.S. states
9·1 day agoThey are building the framework piece by piece. First the API is “Honour Based” then it goes to “Prove It”. For once it looks like baby steps instead of full blown head in a toilet of fresh shit like usual. Build your off line libraries, soon the only way to win will be not to play

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is there an application that stabilizes the volume level of downloaded mp3 files?
121·3 days agoIf playing through VLC, why not use the built in normalizer? Or you can go the more painful route of re-encoding each file to a normalized audio, something I haven’t done since 2k, for use on other devices

Linux@lemmy.ml•I think i am ready to switch from windows and need advice
1·7 days agoKubuntu is what I use to game/VR/stream, it also asks during install if you want non-free repo which will install your nvidia drivers then you can choose which version you use in the settings menu, I used official for VR as that was the recommendation.
My current rig is all AMD (for compatibility) my previous rig was ryzen and rtx 2070 super upgraded to 4070 ti super, works great for streaming and gaming, the gf had an intel with 4 numbers, my rig before my previous rig, and it worked as well under linux as win 10.
As others have suggested, get the ISO’s of several distros: Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Mint/Fedora/Cachy/etc and try them all before you blow your current setup away. My last system was my transition system, kept win 10 and installed a second drive for Kubuntu and used “bios” to chose when to boot it (duel boot on same drive will be problematic after a specific win update, you won’t know which until you do lol) then found replacement software that I needed to move over 100%.
Good luck

4·8 days agoThe life span of CD/DVD is not on the printed media but on the media we make/made our backups on. Of my many spindles from back in 2k (some disks are almost 25 yrs old), so far maybe 5 disks have gone partially or completely unreadable, lucky I didn’t lose much. Baring scratches or other physical damage, the printed disks will last decades where my disks have outlasted prediction

Linus Torvalds uses Fedora last I heard, LTT built him a beast pc, take that for what it is worth. He likes to test the kernel and he says Fedora is most accommodating for him.
