I read ‘Stasi State or Socialist Paradise?: The German Democratic Republic and What Became of It’ by Bruni de la Motte, John Green, and Seumas Milne. This book really challenged my western perspective on East Germany and highlighted the complex collapse that occurred. Something that isn’t talked about is how many social and workers rights were taken away or reduced when the wall fell. Feminism in particular backslid tremendously as state support for female employment was removed and women as a result faced widespread unemployment.

I guess I just want to point out it wasn’t a perfect black and white victory for the west, it was also a calamity that caused depression era style suffering for the people living there. I strongly recommend the book for anyone that enjoys circle jerking the fall of the Wall.

It affects no one if I celebrate, why not enjoy a reason to smile? You just don’t like it because you find it distasteful, there’s no reason to bring morality into this.

It reduces the horrors of conflict down to binary of ‘my team good, your team bad’ which I get us the point but it’s unfair (imo) to equate the actions of oppressed/attacked states to the massively powerful imperial states. Maybe my interpretation is fucked up but my first glance at this meme triggered my bleeding heart.

Arguably, all parties within a liberal democracy are liberal in ideology. Republicans are just the right wing of that liberal system, Dems are to the left of the repubs but both still liberal. In Australia the leading conservative party is quite literally called The Liberal Party.
