If you work on a supervirus with zero safety net, knowing that it will likely escape containment like many of its predecessors did and wreak havoc and still decide to go forth with it, you should be held criminally responsible for what it does. When I left Reddit years ago I was already convinced than more than half the accounts were bots.
Reddit never gave a shit about bots. To them it’s something that pumps up their active users numbers to woo their investors. They’re only doing this so they can force people to view their ads that are designed to look like posts.

Even worse. They destroyed the library and are now charging people money for telling them what was in those books, often providing an answer that is incorrect.
Sadly I can see a future where the non-smart option will no longer be available. Or very limited in choice for the consumer.
It’s already the case with TVs. The next logical step is to make it so it will refuse to work unless you connect it to the internet to “activate” it or even worse have it connect to the cellular network to be always on-line whether the owner of the device is aware of it or not. The vast majority of the consumers are still completely ignorant about this and buy this crap.
Fortunately appliances seem to still offer plenty of “non smart” options for now. But who knows what it will be in 10 years?

At the end it turns out the facility was actively poisoning the entire planet, threatening to wipe out all life and the “attackers” were simply the people of the rest of the world trying to stop it.

But there are orders of magnitude in difference in difficulty between making a piece of software capable of autonomously recognizing a few existing designs of dollar bills and one that can tell a working gun part that can take a shape that can vary almost infinitely from other objects that can also take nearly infinite shapes.
