So preface, I am extremely OOTL with the distros. I have my Fedora box for work and its been running just fine for 5 years now. Before that i am an Arch btw user with i3 config riced to the max. I wanted to get actual work done so i stuck with Fedora and have not attempted any other distros.
Anyway, this Omarchy seems like a big deal? Idk everywhere i search, people are saying stuff like it is the best thing for Linux. Recently, there was news that Omarchy actually got funded for like $8 million?? The money comes from some big names too: Dell, DHH, Stripe, Jack Dorsey…etc. The dev who is working on Hyprland also indirectly benefits from this funding.
Is this going to become a serious corporate backed distro? We have Redhat for that right? Or is this just hype
Fundamentally, it’s got a political mission statement rather than a technological goal (ie. Debian seeks to be a very stable distro that moves slowly). All the money in the world won’t fix that, but he’s gonna have a lot of fun for the next few years.
It’s Oligarchy Linux. Promoted by a bunch of millionaires and billionaires. That’s why it’s everywhere. That’s it.
Another reason people are talking about it is that the creator is a notorious nazi.
DHH is a Nazi pos, and I hate everyone glazing all over Omarchy.
I’m a little torn because if it helps raise awareness and desktop adoption if Linux, that’s a win, but fuck DHH.
According to this blog post, Omarchy has lot of security issues: https://blog.happyfellow.dev/merchants-of-insecurity/
Why is this being downvoted? This is just a naive and curious post; you guys really shouldn’t fall into the Reddit habit of downvoting things that you simply don’t like to read, instead of doing so when things are hateful, factually incorrect, or bad advice.
Honestly, shit like this is why I set up my own lemmy instance where down votes are disabled. It’s built in configuration option, but very, very few instances have it set.
In practice it works pretty well. Popular stuff rises faster than unpopular stuff, but people don’t get shit on for valid but unpopular opinions. It also means you can’t down vote yourself, but the counter to that is to just up vote other things. So much less toxicity and more positivity - I can really recommend it.
Small instances are best. I just wish the big instances didn’t have most of the communities.
Thank you for this! I didn’t realise this existed! I will activate it on my instance 👍
Gotta remember that a lot of Lemmy users are here because they’ve been banned from everywhere else. All the big Lemmy instances are highly moderation averse but I still report dipshits when I see them.
Indeed – downvotes has no purpose other than self-validation needs.
Rich assholes want to capture more nerds to get them in their right-wing influence sphere. Cause there’s no other reason a bunch of fascist pricks would pay 8 million for glorified scripts.
Is it too late to copy a distro and drop some scripts in it for money, or would I have to be a racist dickbag for that to work?
Woke Mind Virus Linux.
SocksOS
you can probably be a pedo too.
As with all things arch based: void better
This blog took a look at it a while ago. Tl;dr, it’s arch, plus hyperland, plus some packages, plus - the original part - some questionably managed dotfiles.
Also, anything DHH does should be immediately suspect. And him having some of his wealthy friends put some money in a foundation isn’t really an indicator of quality, just networking.
Thanks for sharing this blog post, it was very interesting to read :)
Don’t forget that DHH is a rascist piece of shit.
One shouldn’t talk about Omarchy and/or DHH and not bring up fascism (among other issues, but let’s stay focused), self-professed: https://world.hey.com/dhh/three-sacred-cows-that-must-die-so-europe-can-live-1afb203d
At least one Arch maintainer says Arch won’t be associated with them and calls Omarchy “just vibe-coded dotfiles and bash scripts”: https://floss.social/@serebit/117162401397324439
I had to check if this was linuxshitpost or something.
Don’t support or amplify fascists.
How does using a distro amplifies and/or enhances fascism in any way? That makes zero sense. And before you say, “because the one who made it is fascist” – that’d make even less sense.
? You’re legitimizing the fascist? Like: He is the guy who made that software that receive a lot of money and has a good reputation in the community, we should listen to them he seems trustworthy. The fascist part get forgotten if people doesn’t keep talking about it and the PR bullshit keep passing.
No one would fuck know or care about DHH if he was not a creator of a popular framework(he is a racer too but I’m just giving a example of software products here).
Omarchy is too close to oligarchy. Pass.
It is oligarchy.
Yes what’s the deal. Because until yesterday I didn’t heard about them.
I don’t even know what it is. Is it a desktop Linux distribution? Is anyone using it at all?
Some rich dudes pushing money into it. That’s all that I know.
I had a similar experience, though I read about it here a few days before Youtube started pushing videos about how Omarchy supposedly is the reason that everybody must switch to Linux now.
What I have gathered, without being more than moderately interested:
- Some guy made a compositor / tiling window manager named Hyprland. According to its wikipedia article, its main selling points appear to be dynamic tiling, keyboard centric usage, and some fancy blur algorithm.
- Hyprland appears to have had some kind of freemium monetization model, where you had to pay extra for the full version. I.e. unlike the vast majority of Linux and its ecosystem, not FOSS. Perfectly legal of course, but could still be considered a dick move to not give as much back to a community where most other people are giving away their work for free.
- The guy who makes Hyprland reinforces his image as a douchebag by posting racist far right rants on his blog and other places.
- Omarchy is (was?) a script which installs Hyprland on Arch.
- Omarchy/Hyprland is riddled with ridiculously bad security issues, allegedly as a result of relying heavily on vibe coding.
- Some rich guy decides to give a lot of money to Omarchy/Hyprland, so the developer can let people use Hyprland for free, and rebrand Omarchy as a Linux distribution.
marketing, and the end of days
Here’s an article on The Register. I haven’t read through all of this just yet, but this might give you a pretty decent picture:
https://www.theregister.com/os-platforms/2026/08/27/omarchy-distro-gains-serious-backing/5293026
It refers to “the politics behind it” but doesn’t specify what those are. Disappointing for The Reg. Those politics are racism. The people behind Omarchy and Hyprland are openly racist.
It’s the main thing that sets it apart from other distros, so all those companies and billionaires putting their money behind it, probably see that as an attractive feature. So I guess I’ll be avoiding them from now on.
They are: Shopify, Stripe, Dell, Block, Cloudflare, Sesame, 37signals, Dropbox and OpenClaw.
