  • I would love this to be the case, I live in Ohio, I love deer they are beautiful and we have a family of them that live in our woods and I love seeing them.

Deer though are the stupidest motherfuckers on the planet.

One time my mom was driving down a country road with me in the passenger seat. A deer came out of the woods, my mom saw it and stopped, the deer looked at the car and froze. Ok so far nothing crazy, deer just doing deer things. Then the deer runs full speed and at the last moment turns and runs into the side of the completely motionless car ripping the side view mirror off and breaking its own neck.

For as much as I can sympathize with the fact that a deer is an animal that evolved for a completely different environment than the constructed one that humans have pushed them into. Growing up around them you realize that they are beautiful majestic dangerous stupid 200 pounds of muscle and ticks and madness ready to run 30 miles an hour in a random direction if you look at them wrong.

  • I tried it out for a few hobby side projects as someone that doesn’t do much JavaScript development.

It delivered on the dev experience. I didn’t have to learn how to plug a bunch of random tools together because bun had a lot of the basic stuff just bundled in.

Task runner, test runner, typescript, etc.

I think if I spent more time doing JavaScript development work it wouldn’t have really mattered, that project bootstrapping is a one time cost and if you know how to do it it’s cheap enough. As someone that spends most of their time writing other languages though it was nicer than figuring out how to get a bunch of tools to play nice with each other.

  • Talk to people.

It sucks, but that’s the actual answer. You talk to the people that could be potential romantic partners. And you actually take an interest in them as a person and if they take an interest in you too, romance sometimes happens.

The hardest part is that if you are lonely and want a romantic partner, it can be hard to follow. Some people, myself included, are introverts that would prefer not to talk to lots of people. Sometimes the goal of obtaining a partner incorrectly becomes primary (either because you are lonesome, or because you think it’s the next step in your life, etc). It is very difficult to talk to someone and take a genuine interest in them and open up about yourself enough for them to take an interest in you when your focus is on obtaining a partner because people can sense that.

Talk to people, genuinely talk and listen and care about them (or realize you aren’t compatible). It sounds simple but it is really quite difficult. If you want to find people to talk to, engage in the world in things you like where potential romantic partners might also show up.

And if it feels weird, talk to more people, but more than talk listen to them. Not sure what to talk about? Ask them about themselves, people love to talk about themselves. Practice more and more talking to people, all kinds of people. Join groups that meet in person and talk to people. Get good at talking to people and the more you talk the more interesting experiences you have and the more interesting experiences you have the more interesting a partner you become and one day one of those people you are talking to is going to feel important and then you tell them that.

And it might work, it might not, they might not feel the same, you might have a couple awkward conversations that go no where. But we are social creatures, we want to talk and connect and be heard, we want to sit together and spend time together and eat together and share in one another.

My life changed for the better the day I realized I was the only one stopping me from experiencing this.

  • I think it’s due to an incorrect reading of this sentence

“A Strike 3 Holding investigation found that 47 IP addresses belonging to Meta were used to torrent 2,396 of its videos a total of 6,008 times between 2018 and 2025.”

There’s two interpretations of this sentence, that they was a total of 6008 downloads of 2396 videos, so some videos were downloaded multiple times.

The math in that comment is reading it to mean the 2396 items were downloaded 6008 each.

Since the original uses the clarifier “a total of 6,008” the first interpretation is the likely correct one and the commenter accidentally interpreted it the second, incorrect, way.

Easy enough mistake to make if you skip over the phrase “a total of”

  • I recently went to San Francisco for a work trip and Waymo’s were everywhere in SOMA.

I tried them out twice. Both times were after dinner back to the hotel I was staying at, traffic was heavy but weather was your normal bay area weather, 60 and clear.

They worked fine, picked me up, dropped me off, navigated without issue even on some of the more challenging streets. Seemed expensive, $20-25 to go 1-1.5 miles, but I only needed two rides while there and used it both times so maybe that’s competitive or even a good deal compared to uber.

I think the thing that struck me most though was the first trip. A very cheerful robotic voice explained how Waymo worked, the car was almost impossibly clean like no one had ever been in it, the music was some pleasant background music with a cover art that was some swirl of colors. I started thinking about how every part of this experience is aritificial. The voice greeting me, the, probably ai generated, music and album art, the driving robot.

I’ve worked in startups for 20 years now, building little companies into big companies all with missions to change the world for the better in some way or another. That was the Silicon Valley vibe when I got there in the late 2000s, the dot com bust was over and VC was flowing and people were building stuff.

Waymo is interesting because as a service it did exactly what I wanted, got me from the restaurant back to the hotel room to sleep because my jet lagged Ohio brain thought it was 1am. It was clean, efficient, and pleasant. Although the pleasant had this odd feeling of not so much pleasant as designed to be unoffensive.

It was a weird little peek into a potential future, and I can’t say it was bad but it definitely felt different.

On my ride home from the airport back in Ohio I took an uber and the driver was an older gentleman who happened to live the next town over. We chatted, he told me about his ex job as a chemical engineer at a plant that exploded, his ex wife who was an amazing gardener and also a former junkie, we passed a gas station and he let me know that it was run by a father and son who always did right by him and that’s where I should take me car.

I’m not one for chatting most times, I’m not very social. The proximity of the two experiences though showed me the stark difference. I can’t really say an elderly man being forced to do gig work to make ends meet after a colorful life is a particularly good future either.

I feel like I might have been building to some sort of point, but I don’t know what it is. Maybe just wanted to share some random thoughts that recently popped up. I get the appeal of Waymo. I think if you rolled it out everywhere and it worked as well as I experienced and was a reasonable price it would dominate. I’m also not sure if I’d want it to, but it seems that the future has a way of happening with or without our consent.

  • I have been THC free now for like 18 months. Loved getting high, still miss it sometimes, but same as you, less anxiety, more in control, more ambitious.

My spouse got me the book Paddle your own Canoe by the very funny Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec)

One really good piece of advice in that book that I took to heart was that I needed something to replace getting high. We moved out to rural Ohio around the same time and I made working the land my hobby.

Mowing, pruning, sawing, digging, there’s always something to do and in the end I have this nice sense of accomplishment. Getting high used to be my hobby, I’d get high and play video games or watch a movie or listen to music and it was great and sometimes I still miss it. Realizing that losing one hobby is a lot easier when you replace it with another hobby though ended up being what made this stick.

18 months later I still occasionally think “it would be fun to get high” but it has definitely gone from craving to passing thought that I can dismiss.

Whether you stay thc free or indulge occasionally I hope you have a happy and wonderful life.

  • Additional context:

TSA is part of DHS (Department of Homeland Security). ICE and border patrol are also a part of DHS.

After ICE started shooting citizens, the democrats said “no additional funding without some reforms.” In trumps Big Beautiful Bill ICE was already given a huge chunk of funding for the next few years, but they would like more.

Democrats have been trying to fund TSA but want a separate vote for ICE. This arrangement recently passed the senate but republicans in the house voted it down because they think they can pin the blame on the democrats and force them to give ICE more funding along with the TSA.
